It seems hard to believe but we are now well into the high school football post-season and I am just now covering my first playoff game. I missed the first week of playoff games because I was in Austin attending the Formula 1 race and second round of games because of the Thanksgiving holiday. So last week I was assigned to shoot the regional playoff game between Wall and Merkel at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood.
This was going to be an interesting game and I was really excited about shooting it. Wall was coming into this game with a 10-1 record. That one blemish came from a loss back in September from, you guessed it, Merkel. This was a rematch game, one that Wall was not going to take lightly.
As the first quarter began it was easy to see that Wall was going to be the team to decide the pace of the game. Wall's first touchdown came late in the quarter off a 51-yard run by sophomore fullback Clint Masters with just under three minutes remaining. Wall managed two more touchdowns to Merkel's one score before the half, leading 21-7.
Wall added three more scoring drives and Merkel was only able to muster one more touchdown in the final three minutes of the game with the final score 42-14. Wall would advance to the regional final against Eastland, the team that eliminated the Hawks from the playoffs last season. They will play at Gordon Wood Stadium again this week. Wall looks pretty good this year and I would love to see them move on to the next round this week.
